Sleep Deprivation in Working Parents: Why Your Career Performance Starts in the Nursery

Sleep Deprived Working Parents, is not Fun!

Have you ever found yourself sitting in an important meeting, quietly calculating how many hours of sleep you got the night before instead of focusing on the conversation?

I have. As an engineering leader, I know what it's like to walk into meetings expected to lead teams, make important decisions, and solve complex problems. As a working mom of three, I also know what it's like to spend the night soothing a baby, responding to multiple wake-ups, and wondering how you're supposed to show up at your best when you've barely slept. I've lived both worlds, and I understand the unique challenges career-driven parents face when exhaustion follows them from home to work. That experience changed the way I think about sleep.

Most people see pediatric sleep as "just a parenting issue." I see it differently. Your child's sleep affects every part of your life, including your ability to lead, think clearly, enjoy your family, and show up confidently at work.

That's why I created Dreamy Slumber Pediatric Sleep Consulting: to help career-driven parents reclaim restful nights, calmer homes, and the confidence to thrive both at home and in their careers.

The Hidden Cost of Sleep Deprivation

When your child isn't sleeping well, neither are you. At first, you convince yourself you'll push through; another cup of coffee; a quick afternoon energy drink; maybe a little more patience tomorrow. But eventually, the exhaustion catches up and you begin forgetting small things. Your focus drifts during meetings and the simple decisions take longer than they should. You find yourself feeling more emotional, less patient, and wondering why everything suddenly feels harder.

Research consistently shows that sleep deprivation impacts attention, memory, emotional regulation, decision-making, and productivity. In many ways, operating on fragmented sleep can impair performance similarly to alcohol intoxication. For career-driven parents, that's more than frustrating...it's exhausting.

Why I Believe Sleep Is More Than a Parenting Issue

As both an engineering leader and a Pediatric Sleep Consultant, I naturally approach problems differently. Engineers don't guess, we look for patterns. We identify root causes and we build systems that work consistently. That's exactly how I approach children's sleep. Instead of relying on conflicting advice from social media or hoping your child eventually

"grows out of it", we build a personalized sleep plan based on your child's developmental needs, temperament, and your family's schedule. Because every family deserves a solution that works in real life, not just in theory.

Better Sleep Creates Better Days

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that sleep consulting is only about helping babies sleep through the night and of course that's important, but that's only part of the story. When your child sleeps better… You wake up feeling like yourself again. You have more patience during bedtime; you're more present with your spouse; you stop counting the hours of sleep you've had before your first meeting; you finish work with energy left for your family; you enjoy weekends instead of simply recovering from the week. Sleep changes everything.

Practical Strategies That Make a Difference

Helping your child sleep isn't about perfection, it's about consistency. Some of the biggest improvements often come from simple changes, including:

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

  • Dark room.

  • White noise.

  • A safe sleep space.

  • Small environmental changes can have a significant impact on sleep quality.

Build Predictable Routines

Children thrive on consistency. A calm bedtime routine helps signal to your child's brain that it's time for sleep while reducing bedtime resistance.

Teach Independent Sleep Skills

Many night wakings happen because children haven't yet learned how to transition between sleep cycles independently. When those skills develop, families often experience dramatically longer stretches of sleep.

Stay Consistent

Consistency doesn't mean perfection. We all understand that life happens, we travel, someone is likely to get sick, but maintaining a predictable foundation helps your child return to healthy sleep more quickly.

The Return on Investing in Better Sleep

People often ask whether working with a Pediatric Sleep Consultant is worth it. I like to think about it differently.

Imagine…Walking into Monday morning's leadership meeting feeling rested. Think about how well you would perform with the mental clarity to make important decisions with confidence. When was the last time you finished work on time because you're focused instead of fighting fatigue. What would it mean if you had enough patience to enjoy bedtime instead of simply surviving it. Imagine being fully present with your family after work instead of counting down until bedtime. That's the true return on better sleep, not just for your child but for your entire family.

Rested at Home. Confident at Work.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned as both a working mom and a sleep consultant is this: You don't have to choose between succeeding in your career and being the parent you want to be. With the right support, you can have both, healthy sleep creates calmer homes and calmer homes create more confident parents. Confident parents are able to show up with greater patience, focus, and joy in every part of life.

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone

If you're exhausted from broken nights, bedtime battles, or wondering how you'll make it through another workday after another sleepless night, I want you to know something:

You're not failing. You're simply navigating one of the hardest seasons of parenting. As a working mom of three, I understand the pressure of balancing career responsibilities with the demands of raising young children. I have a 2, 4 and 6 year old.

As a Certified Sleep Sense™ Consultant, I also know that better sleep is possible. Together, we'll build a practical, personalized sleep plan that fits your child, your schedule, and your family's goals, so you can reclaim restful nights, calmer homes, and the confidence to thrive at home and at work.

You do not need to be another sleep deprived working parent, because when your family sleeps well, everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
